Counting patent citations is considered by many to be one of the metrics that can be used to value patent documents. As such the way we count both backwards and forward citations has a significant impact on the numbers we generate for this key metric. This blog post looks at the question of equivalents and patent families and the impact they have on the way we count patent citations. Citations are normally associated with discreet documents and with the case of patent equivalents the documents are discreet but are their circumstances where, for instance, the citations of a pre-grant application should be counted with the corresponding granted patent?
