Working Knowledge is a social enterprise created to decrease unemployment rates in the UK by providing business mentors to coach and encourage college students in a bid to improve their chances of employment, post-education. ClearViewIP's Managing Director, Jon Calvert, was pleased to be invited to participate as a mentor at their latest event hosted by Abingdon and Witney College (Berkshire) at theKassam Stadium, last week.
Around 120 students participated in the all-day workshop, with career aspirations ranging from hairdressing and fashion design to engineering and military intelligence. Despite such an eclectic mix, Jon was surprised to discover that the majority of participants, all aged 16-21, actually knew what they wanted to do, and in some instances, particular companies they aspired to work for: "I was impressed with the career objectives and enthusiasm of the guys I worked with, they all had goals and ambitions and this event helped them develop more confidence and 'employability' skills, with a noticeable step change in just one day!"
The Working Knowledge workshop coordinated business games which tackled the acquisition and application of certain skills that are required in the business world: from identifying problems to creating solutions; building a business plan; and pitching to a panel of 'dragons' and, perhaps more challengingly, their peers. ClearViewIP were pleased to be offered the opportunity to partake in this workshop and hope to be involved in similar events in the future.
